Karnataka Budget: Student Union Elections to Return in Colleges
Bengaluru: In a significant announcement during the Karnataka Budget 2026–27, Chief Minister stated that student union elections will be conducted again in colleges and universities across the state. The move is aimed at reviving democratic practices among students and encouraging youth leadership.

Student union elections had been largely absent in many educational institutions for several years. With this decision, the intends to provide students with a formal platform to represent their issues and participate in campus governance.
The government believes that conducting elections will help students understand democratic values, leadership responsibilities, and the functioning of representative systems from an early stage.

Several student organizations and academic circles across the state have reacted positively to the announcement, stating that elected student bodies can improve communication between students and college administrations.
The decision is expected to bring renewed political and social engagement among students across Karnataka’s universities and colleges, with further guidelines on the election process likely to be announced in the coming months.
