Tulu to Get Second Official Language Status in Karnataka

In a landmark decision with major significance for coastal Karnataka, the State Cabinet has decided to accord Tulu the status of Karnataka’s second official language. The announcement marks a major breakthrough for a decades-old demand for official recognition of the language and is expected to give a fresh impetus to the preservation and promotion of Tulu.

The decision comes amid sustained demands from Tulu organisations, writers, cultural groups and public representatives, particularly from Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts. Official recognition is expected to strengthen efforts to promote Tulu in government and public life and support its preservation as an important part of Karnataka’s linguistic and cultural heritage.

The state-level official language status is separate from inclusion in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution. While the Karnataka government can take steps regarding official-language status within the state, inclusion in the Eighth Schedule requires action by the Union Government and Parliament. The formal government notification and details of implementation will determine the exact scope of Tulu’s new status.
